ASHRAE (sometimes pronounced ash-ray) stands for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. ASHRAE develops standards for both its members and others professionally concerned with refrigeration processes and the design,building systems, energy efficiency and maintenance of indoor environments.It was founded in 1894 and has more than 50,000 members worldwide.
ASHRAE writes standards for the purpose of establishing consensus for:
1) methods of test for use in commerce and
2) performance criteria for use as facilitators with which to guide the industry.
ASHRAE publishes the following three types of voluntary consensus standards :-
- Method of Measurement or Test,
- Standard Design and
- Standard Practice.
The ASHRAE Handbook is a four-volume resource for HVAC&R technology and is available in both print and electronic versions. The volumes are:-
- Fundamentals
- HVAC Applications
- HVAC Systems and Equipment and
- Refrigeration.
