How Lathe Machine Works?

The lathe is a machine tool which holds the workpiece and rotates the object fixed between the headstock and tail stock of the chuck about its central point to perform various operations such as Threading, Chamfering, knurling, drilling, or deformation, facing, turning, with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object with symmetry about that axis.

The Engine or center lathe is a general purpose lathe and widely used in worshops. The cutting tool may be fed both in cross and longitudinal direction with reference to the lathe axis. The size of a lathe is specified by

1. The height of the center above the top of the bed.
2. The swing or the maximum diameter of the work that can be rotated over the ways of the bed.
3. The maximum length of the work that can be accommodated between the lathe center.
4. The maximum diameter of the work that can be rotated over the lathe spindle.

The various lathe accessories used for holding and supporting the works are as follows:

1. Centers.
2. Chunks.
3. Mandrels.
4. Lathe dog or Carrier.

The principle parts of the lathe are:

1. Bed
2. Head stock
3. Tail stock
4. Carriage
5. Feed mechanism
6. Gear Box
7. Legs
